Vancouver Symphony Orchestra

Marcus Goddard holds the position of Acting Principal Trumpet of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with Vancouver New Music, Standing Wave, the Vancouver Opera, the CBC Orchestra and the VSO Brass Quintet.
Recent performing highlights with the VSO include the trumpet solo from Gyorgy Ligeti's virtuosic Mysteries of the Macabre and Manfredini's Concerto for Two Trumpets. Marcus is excited to be a member of the recently formed Turning Point Ensemble.
Marcus has performed extensively throughout North America and Europe. As principal trumpet of the Tenerife Symphony, Marcus performed in the recording of Mahler's Third Symphony. He has held principal positions in the Owensboro Symphony, the Columbus, Indiana Philharmonic and was Co-principal Trumpet in the Spoleto Festival, the Aims Festival in Graz, Austria and the National Orchestral Institute.
Marcus received a Bachelors Degree from the University of Michigan under Armando Ghitalla and Charles Daval and a Masters Degree from Indiana University as a pupil of John Romme.
Marcus has been on faculty at the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and the Vancouver Academy of Music and served as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University. Marcus currently teaches at the Master's level at UBC as a sessional faculty member.
In addition to performing a wide range of repertoire, Marcus has also received many commissions for compositions in Canada and the United States. He composed and produced the score to the film; Breakfast at Sharkey's and has composed a series of chamber works for young players in the Quiring Chamber Music School. His works, My End is my Beginning was performed by the Vancouver Symphony in its Coulthard reading session and Angels was performed in a similar session by the Victoria Symphony. Marcus recently performed his quartet for trumpet, violin, cello and piano titled Exothermic with Vancouver's Standing Wave. During the fall of 2002, Marcus's Millennia Music for brass quintet was performed by the VSO Brass Quintet and recorded by CBC for broadcast on West Coast Performance. Marcus has just completed a work for string trio and speaker based on his own poem titled “Stay on the Sea” and is looking forward to a possible collaboration with dancer/choreographer Cori Caulfield.
