The Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific offers a uniquely rounded musical experience for emerging, talented, orchestral players. It demands a self-motivated, mature student who can take advantage of all the offerings, musical and extra-musical, without individual guidance.
Located on the Sunshine Coast about 80 air-miles north of Vancouver, Powell River is lapped by the waters of Malaspina Strait and nestled against the Coastal Mountain Range. There is a multitude of summer activities, from other arts and cultural offerings, to outdoor recreation such as hiking, biking, kayaking, boating and fishing, as well as town amenities such as restaurants, shops, golf courses, medical/dental services and a host of others.
The following frequently asked questions may help you prepare for your first time in Powell River.
What are the age requirements for participating in SOAP?
While there is no specific age limit preference is normally shown to those between the ages of 18 and 32. The sole criterion for admission is musical excellence.
Does SOAP include private lessons with the instructors? If so, is there an extra cost?
Both private lessons and master classes are included as part of your fee and are offered within the SOAP program. Additional private instruction may be negotiated with the Academy if desired.
Are scholarship funds available? If so, how does one apply?
There are a limited number of tuition scholarships available. Scholarships will be awarded based on the “live” and/or taped auditions. No application is necessary.
Are “in-person” auditions available?
Yes. Arrangements may be available in selected cities. Contact the SOAP office for the particulars.
How many concerts will students participate in during SOAP?
There will be one major symphony orchestra concert per week during SOAP. Participants may also perform with ensembles in informal concerts and attend performances by the SOAP faculty and the opera academy.
How many players will be selected for the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific?
Up to 90 players will be chosen to complete a full symphony orchestra.
What kinds of performance opportunities are available other than my orchestra assignment?
Participants will perform with the SOAP orchestra at the end of each week. There will also be informal opportunities for both individuals and ensembles to perform in the community. The faculty will give chamber music concerts as well as student ensembles.
What do I wear to perform?
There are no special dress requirements for rehearsals, but students are expected to provide and to wear the appropriate concert attire for performances.
For women: Black long dress or pants.
For men: Tuxedo or Black suit.
What is the climate like in Powell River during the Symphony Orchestra Academy of
the Pacific?
Powell River is located on the Sunshine Coast of the British Columbia mainland about 135 km northwest of Vancouver. The community faces the Strait of Georgia and Vancouver Island. The area enjoys an average of 1400 – 1900 hours of sunshine per year with moderate rainfall. Summers are pleasantly warm with typical temperatures in the range of 18 – 30C (65 – 90F).
With all the outdoor activities available, you might want to bring along clothing suited to hiking, wilderness activities and/or boating and fishing. Opportunities for more formal attire will most likely be limited to performances. Casual clothing, shorts and jeans will be your main choice.
How do I get to Powell River?
Powell River is a short flight by Pacific Coastal Airlines (25 minutes from Vancouver International Airport – South Terminal), or a scenic five-hour drive (including two sailings aboard BC Ferries).
Daily motor coaches via Malaspina Coach Line are also available from Vancouver.
Arriving from Vancouver Island is via a BC Ferry sailing from Comox, near Courtenay.
